Skane Aquavit Herbal Liqueur Recipe

Skåne County is the southernmost county of Sweden.  I bought a little package of herbs for making liqueurs online and the package was named Skane Snapskrydda (which translates to snaps spices).  When I googled Skane I found that there is a brand of aquavit of the same name.

The predominant flavor in aquavit is typically caraway which this recipe contains:

1/2 Tsb caraway seeds
1/2 Tsb wormwood
1/2 Tsb Star Anise
1/2 Tsb shaved Almonds
750ml Vodka (I used Portland Potato Vodka)

Add all spices to the vodka and shake the bottle a few times in the first 10 hours.  After 24 hours filter through a coffee filter. Add 1/3 cup of sugar ( I used agave syrup and it was wonderful). Let sit for a week for the flavors to meld.

This turned out wonderful! The caraway and star anise are very bold with the wormwood following in the finish.  The sugar helps soften and round out the flavors.

I would experiment with other traditional aquavit herbs such as cardamom, cumin, fennel, dill, and lemon or orange peel.  I think 2 Tablespoons is a great guideline for this recipe.
